1950's Sleepover

The Rockwell breakfast shot I posted yesterday must have been on the same roll as today's pictures - the exposure is ridiculously the same.

This was a sleepover my mom hosted for a few of her friends.  It would have been in the very early 1950's, maybe '52 or '53.

I love the huge bowl of popcorn and the kernels getting dropped on the floor.  I'm sure as soon as this photo was snapped my grandma had the broom and dustpan out and whisking up the mess.  I also laugh that the girls had their hair pinned up for the night.  That's certainly a habit that fell by the wayside when I was a teen.

Before the girls nestled down for their sleeping bags and popcorn, they had to play GAMES!  Seeing this explains a lot about my slumber parties.  My mom would try to meddle, designing a whole itinerary for the night.  It always fell flat as we would prefer to be left to our own resources.  But look at this!  A hat was on a string like a pinata, but instead of hitting it you were to try to get your head INTO the hat.  I'm quite sure it was damn impossible and worth a few laughs.

You'll notice an eerie similarity between this table and the one I posted yesterday.  Of course my eyes rivet, once more, to the drinking vessels.  These aren't the cartoon laden jigger/juice glasses the adults got.  No, these are the iconic tin cups that I clearly recall being part of the kitchen wares in my grandparents camper.  I loved those cups.  Nothing screams 1950 to me more than those.  I also love the expression on the one girl's face, her extreme pleasure to be allowed to eat or that the food was identifiable or that she just got confirmation that her mother is on the way to rescue her - hard to call.

Finally the visit is over so they pose as cool as awkward junior high girls can possibly be, next to the family car.
