I really am unfair when sitting down to watch many of these movies. I'm quite prejudiced, ready to not like one because it's especially old, or has a certain actor, or is a dancing, singing frenzy. And then one creeps through the cracks and warms my frozen heart. And maybe this is the whole reason for my exercise in attempting to watch so many movies.
Top Hat (1935) is exactly one such movie. Despite over-the-top big dance productions that burst onto the scene out of nowhere only to highlight the brilliant dance moves of Rogers and Astaire, this was really a fabulously fun movie.
Fred Astaire meets up with a friend whose wife is bound to match him with one of her friends. There is a mixup and Ginger Rogers thinks Fred is her friend's flirtatious husband. I giggled more than once and was excited to see the truth finally reveled. Of course the dancing was necessary, I mean why else have the notorious dancing duo in a movie at all?
Best of all, a light and fluffy movie in the midst of personal loss and other dreary, sad movies seems to be the perfect fix for a gloomy day.

Friday Fragments - December 21, 2012
Aha! We survived the Mayan apocalypse. So, are you disappointed or relieved? Personally, I think we missed a golden opportunity to consume massive amounts of Mexican food. We thought it was a grand idea at work but we had a whole buffet of food left over from the potluck the day before. Maybe on Wednesday when we return we'll celebrate the Mayans.
Last weekend my older son got married. It was a beautiful wedding and a very fun reception.
After much coaxing my daughter got the teenager on the dance floor.
Of course the star of the show was my grandson, the ring bearer
He promptly passed out
Daddy posing by him
Because our groom had been a ring bearer 20 years ago and also passed out at the reception
Movie suggestion for the Christmas Season - The Bishop's Wife. I see it's scheduled to play a couple of times on TCM today (Sunday) at 7pm and midnight. I thought it was a sweet film that captured the Christmas spirit very well. Please make a point of looking for it.
My plan for the weekend is to make cookies!!!! Hubby doesn't want me to go overboard, except of course, to make plenty of peanut butter. I figured I will make the batters and probably use only half of each, freezing the rest. Then I can have fresh baked cookies later on. We'll see. I might just go overboard after all.
May everyone have a very merry Christmas!

Sunday In my City - Casa Loma
I attended a fundraiser a little bit ago held in a famous location that I had never been before. I've long heard about the Casa Loma Danceroom from the old timers that grew up in St. Louis. It's definitely not a handicap accessible facility - stairs EVERYWHERE. I guess there might be an elevator, but I don't know where they hid it.
The band that night was Spontaneous Nugent. It concerned me because I had never heard them and feared the old people might riot at hard rock being played. They were instead a very versatile cover band spanning the generations. They even played Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga. Definitely a great dance band and they rocked the house. No rioting by senior citizens, just a lot of twisting.
It cracked me up to see this tray. It's from Pantera's Pizza. I don't even know if any Pantera's are still around. My little clepto fingers severely itched to grab it and run.

Sunday In My City - January 2, 2011
WHEW! We made it! 2011 is here... HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
I spent ringing in the new year doing exactly what I have done for the past twenty years - drinking with my friends. Most of the pictures are out of focus but it's obvious what's going on (and I don't have to mess with photoshop to erase their faces - bonus!)

Celebrating Girls Night
Is there ANYTHING better than a night hanging with the girls? Last night I attended a baby shower - a totally different type of girls night. It was for one of my daughter's friends, but I had a good time catching up with girls I haven't seen in nearly a year. The honoree's aunt and I got to talking about the music playing and I started to reminisce about nights long ago when I could be found at one of the local clubs.
My regular partner in crime was Booty. She was, and still is, all about getting her dance groove on. While I enjoy dancing as well, it is more of a "flail" and is dangerous to anyone in a certain radius around me - usually Booty. The poor woman has been cocked by one of my disjointed arms more than once.
While we enjoyed the flirtations of passing men and the accompanying drinks, we were there to DANCE. The throbbing music so loud you can't hold a conversation, tables with insufficient chairs, unattended purses, and watered down drinks - it was an experience! Memories flash through my brain, like the time we got up on the surfboard bar to dance only to have some smartass guys lean back to lay their heads on the bar and look up our skirts. So I kicked one in the head. Dude! DO NOT ruin my night of dancing!
Yes, I was married at the time, but he took it well. We told him all of the stories and how well I behaved. And I DID behave, I was a freaking ANGEL. And because I behaved, Booty had to behave and never staggered home with some stalker freak. Like I said, we were there for the dancing.
There was an understanding that if I got home after 6am that I had to bring breakfast as well. So I never waltzed in after 5:59 am. :)
One time however, Booty and I were uber generous and offered some out of town boys attending a bachelor party a ride back to their motel. We made it clear we had no intentions of violating our promise to behave so we dropped them off, made a mad dash into their room to pee, jumping over passed out bodies everywhere when we got a hairbrained idea. The balcony outside their door overlooked the pool closed up for the winter. And I wanted one of those pool chairs! BADLY!
The boys gladly helped Booty over the fence wearing sister's leather mini skirt. She tossed two chairs over the fence and then scrambled back over. At some point she ripped the seam in her skirt, giving an even greater show. Somehow we maneuvered the chairs into her 1970's barge of a car. We waved toodledoo to the boys and drove off into the sunrise, laughing our fool heads off.
It's always very disconcerting to drive home after such a long night and to pass early morning joggers. It's just so incongruent with everything we had experienced in the past eight or ten hours.
We pulled into my apartment, set up the chairs on the back porch and then quietly pulled a groggy spouse out of bed careful not to wake the sleeping children, so he could appreciate our acquisition! Booty settled into one chair, lighting a cigarette. He shrugged his shoulders and asked where breakfast was. DAMMIT - I brought you CHAIRS!
Those chairs lasted many years until another drunken foray finally destroyed them.
Happy memories!

Twisting The Night Away
Digging through the old pictures again, but some of you might take issue with the word "old". This was taken in 1963. It's my parents dancing, something they both enjoy today (with different people).
