Friday Fragments - March 18, 2011

Fridays are such fun days!  Wednesday was my Friday this week since I took yesterday and today off work.  My coworkers could definitely tell I was suffering from Friday-itis.  So today, on the real Friday, I get to share all of my bits and pieces of the previous week.  Let's all tip a hat to Mrs. 4444's at Half Past Kissing Time for allowing us a chance to share.

*************

Saturday was my son's All-Star game.  His team placed 4th out of 5 for the season.  In the game the first and fifth place teams were grouped to play against the other 3 teams.  My son's group won!  This is his fourth year playing floor hockey and he has come such a long way.  I think he's finally growing into his body - he no longer runs like Forest Gump.

*************

Over the weekend I was bragging on the work I was doing for the company's website.  As I was doing a bit of show and tell I discovered a HUGE problem with how it displays in Internet Explorer.  I spent all day Sunday researching the problem and it turns out IE is a royal pain in the ass for web design.  Do yourselves a huge favor and move over to a different web browser like Mozilla's firefox so you can properly see web pages the way the designers intended.  After a lot of arm wrestling with the code I finally conquered the problem.  I'm quite proud of myself.

*************

Sunday was also the day of Patty's living wake.  She has been told her cancer is terminal and the doctors have run out of options so she decided to hold her wake before she goes.  Like several of her internet friends I was unable to go to Phoenix for the party so we lifted a few glasses of vino in her honor.  It sounds like the party was a lot of fun.

I can't stop thinking about Patty.  She has fought this disease tooth and nail and I am certain that her fighting spirit is what has kept her here.  She posts every morning on Facebook, greeting the day with a smile and words of happiness.  The world is a better place with Patty in it.

*************

We woke up on Monday to a fluffy layer of snow.  Although it was gone by afternoon everyone was grumpy about it.  Personally I thought it was beautiful.  I'm a little miffed that I failed to take a picture of it because it really was beautiful.

*************

I am smack dab in the middle of "busy season" at work.  Doesn't it sound like I'm a tax accountant or something?  There are just a ton of projects coming at me from all directions so I decided to take a tiny break and come up for air since the next 30 days will be go go go go go.  It has already affected me in the blogging world as I am skipping several days of posting and have all but stopped visiting all of you.  It makes me sad, I miss you.  I promise to be back, just give me a little time.

Friday Fragments - February 25, 2011

And here we are again, Friday.  Fridays are such strange days, frequently very silly days.  I really enjoy them, even when it includes a ton of work, especially after a day like yesterday that felt every bit like a Monday.  How is it days of the week have a "feeling"?  I don't know, but they do for me.  And isn't it great Mrs. 4444's sponsors an opportunity to spend this wacky day together, sharing our bits and pieces of the week?

*Well, last Friday I was off work as a little reward for completing a huge project.  Unfortunately it was NOT relaxing.  I had five, FIVE, freaking calls from work.  I really need some assistance in my department soon.  Interviews have been going on and possibly a last round next week - keep your fingers crossed.

*Friday night made up for the bogus day off as my friends gathered for happy hour.  Over priced plates of munchies but delicious drinks for several hours.  It was great to get out.

*Saturday I attended a baby shower for a co-worker expecting twins.  She is the recipient of the first two projects produced by my new sewing machine, crib quilts.

*On Tuesday I attended a career fair looking for an intern.  Some really great candidates came through so now I need to take a few minutes to actually review their resumes and schedule interviews.  Would it be wrong to look into getting an intern just focused on attending career fairs and conducting interviews for future interns?  Worse yet?  Not one single phone call from the office.  I knew that would happen - endless calls on my day off and zilch when I'm out of the office for work purposes.  Murphy and his stupid law can suck it.

*Tuesday night was the last hockey practice of the season so we made it the parent-player game.  AND WE WON!  Without cheating!  All I can say is, damn, I'm out of shape.  It was fun, though.

I hope everyone is safe after last night's storms that swept across the US.  It's rare to have turbulent weather from coast to coast.  Yesterday St. Louis had torrential rain and this morning we woke up to a light dusting a snow.  My friends in Nashville had tornado sirens over night and I see that snow is expected in San Fransisco.  Stay warm and stay safe!

Friday Fragments - December 23, 2010

I'm getting a in a late post for Friday Fragments.  We've spent the day with my inlaws - interesting gathering to say the least.  Instead of focusing on today, let's recap the last week.

*Last Saturday I missed my son's hockey game.  It's probably a good thing as one of his teammates was plowed into and broke his arm.  The other team had already been penalized twice for roughness so everyone is in an uproar over this.  Keep Willie in your prayers.  There is never a good time to break your arm, but just before Christmas and during a big snowstorm?  Totally sucks!

*I wasn't able to complete any quilts for Christmas gifts so we broke down and ventured out to the stores on Tuesday.  Ugh.  Last minute shopping really isn't much fun.  The crowds are moronic, the lines are slow and the shelves are picked over.

*While shopping we came across a fabulous deal on a sewing machine so Merry Christmas to me!  I'm excited to get cracking on all of my half started projects.  I may not have completed anything for Christmas, but there are plenty of birthdays coming up.  And a grandbaby.... SQEEEEEEEE!!!!

*Yesterday our office held an ugly sweater contest.  I was one of the finalists in my ever so lovely turtle neck with pink flamingos and Christmas wreaths.  Quite hideous.

*This morning I woke up to snow!!!  I just love seeing snow fall.  After all of the family mayhem this afternoon I took a walk in the snow and was simply happy happy happy.

*My house smells divine.  I've baked several loaves of pumpkin bread and a batch of chex mix.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

Sunday In My City - October 17, 2010

Unknown Mami

I love participating in Unknown Mami's Sunday in My City.  I haven't taken many pictures lately despite carrying a camera every freaking place I go.  I promise to get something more substantial for next week.  Today I have just one meager picture to share

This is my son's first hockey practice of the year.  It's amazing how much he has improved since he started playing four years ago.  I'm excited for the first game of the season - just a few weeks away.

Hockey Pic

There it is, but I swear to God that's my mother.  Yes, me on the floor with a hockey stick and the guy behind me looks like he's going to hit me.  I'm sure I deserved it.

I think I'm still wheezing.

I Got To Play HOCKEY!

Last night was the players against the parents game.  I have never played hockey so this was interesting.  No, not ice hockey, the last time I put on ice skates I gave myself a concussion.  Floor hockey wasn't much better as I fell on my ass in the first 2 minutes.

His dad and stepmom also came out to play... probably a good thing we were on the same team or that could have been violent.  No actually we are quite able to be in the same room peacefully.  The dads did pretty good out on the floor, the moms barely protected the net.  All of us were panting heavily after each line change and had bright red faces.

We lost, but only by a few points - bummer.  But hey, my kid finally landed a goal!  AND

he was chosen to play in the all-star game!  Woot!

If I get pictures I'll post them later today.

Friday Fragments - Feb 5, 2010

Mommy's Idea

Click the link above to find all of the other fun people recounting the bits and pieces of their week.

I, however, slacked and didn't record any bits and pieces for the week so I'm stranded, leaving you with an incoherent babbling mess.

Clearly I did not dance eloquently enough for the snow dance and am being punished with rain instead.  For those of you receiving fourteen feet of white fluffy stuff, do not bitch and whine.  Just know you received MY snow and I would gladly take it off your hands.  Feel free to pack it up and send it my way.  Before you do, take lots of pictures.  Repackaged snow just never looks the same.  I am tremendously amused by the concept of a "snow drunk" presented by Bye Bye Pie.  One of these days we will receive enough snow to construct a snow thing of some form... *sigh*

This is the second week my son got to play goalie at his hockey practice.  The poor child is just the gangliest thing ever.  At least this week he didn't look like a scarecrow assuming the police-pat-down position every time the puck came his direction.  He tucked it in this time and even managed to block a few pucks.  No he isn't going to be our back up goalie (Dear God PLEASE no, for the team's sake), but the regular kid has been suffering a lingering cold and it's a good chance for the other players to appreciate what it's like to have to stand still with pucks and huge kids running straight for you, with a mask muffling your hearing.

As the technology goddess at work and the only person who has any idea how to do our former office manager's job (as in sat in her chair once and was known for speaking directly to her on several occasions) I was given the lovely task to figure out our phone system, in particular, how to reset the automated greetings.  Yes, that is plural.  In all, I had three different messages that had to be changed.  So until we get a new person to fill that position, *I* will be the voice greeting all incoming calls.  It would be kind of cool except my phone messages have a Darth Vader/mouth breather essence to them.  Hopefully they will be replaced in the very near future.  On the upside, I muddled through the asinine directions from the manual and condensed them down to one page with copies given to multiple people so if I fall off the face of the planet somebody else can change the message without staring a stupid book for two hours.  I detest directions written by programmers.

OH HOLY CRAP!  I just saw this on TV - tomorrow is NATIONAL EAT ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST DAY!  Please stock up accordingly and celebrate properly.
