This is a phrase I put together this morning driving into work.
You get on the road and are given a set of lanes to operate. You can keep them or change your route. In light traffic it's best to go your regular direction, but in heavy traffic this is a gamble. Stay in the slowly moving traffic? Or exit for what is a seemingly faster route only to get held up by a bunch of other people making that same decision or by traffic lights or yet another accident?
Change lanes? Or stay here?
Change lanes to pass a slower car only to miss your exit?
It's always a gamble.
And game face. Oh that is sooo important in poker. Game face for Traffic Jam Poker is letting other people in your lane or you trying to get into a different lane. Speed up, slow down. Everyone is jockeying for a spot.
Some people take this game very seriously, others just go with the flow. I think I'm somewhere in the middle. I verbalize a lot as I drive and it makes me think I am filled with rage, but the idiot quotient is high so I'm sure it's them, not me.
Thinking of it like a card game may lower my stress levels on the highway.

Drawsome
Last week someone convinced me to try the game "Draw Something"
I totally suck at drawing. I mean REALLY bad. The only upside to this game is that I crack myself up with how absolutely horrid my drawings are.
It's like Pictionary with a limited set of letters to choose from for the answer. Kinda hangman-ish. I think the cache of letters is the only way to get past my dreadful drawings.
The biggest drawback is that it can only be played on a touch screen like an iphone, Android, or ipad. I detest playing games on my phone because it drains the shit out of the battery, and because I can barely see the tiny screen, and because my drawings are even worse (like that was even possible) with the tee-tiny palate, and because my hand cramps up from holding the phone.

A New Game! POS Car Points
Based on yesterday's post about Piece Of Shit let's make a game out of it. How many points can you earn based on your past experiences with crappy cars? Increase your points by adding to the list (email or comment)!
One point for each item that you have ever experienced with a car you owned:
1 Stalling out at stop lights
2 Broken gas gauge
3 Carry a gas can because of broken gas gauge
4 Continuously stop to put another $5 of gas into car because of broken gas gauge
5 Running out of gas 2 blocks away from any gas station
6 Roll into gas station, completely out of fuel
7 You describe your car color as "rust", "technicolor", "tri" or "quad" color
8 Locking your car is unnecessary, sometimes impossible
9 You have perfected the Dukes of Hazard move of jumping through a window because doors don't properly open
10 Opening a car door by sticking your hand out the window because the inside knob is missing or jammed
11 Windows that don't roll down
12 Driver's door is jammed meaning you have to enter and exit via passenger side door
13 Mystery smell every time you use the heater (mine smelled exactly like stale hamburgers)
14 Inoperable A/C
15 Looks of pity when you drive through a "bad" neighborhood
16 Broken horn
17 Cars that whiz past you include little old ladies who can barely see over their steering wheels
18 Can only access the trunk by removing a rear seat
19 Broken radio or radio stuck on one station, usually a religious station, talk radio, or dueling accordions
20 Drooping roof liner
21 Do-it-yourself repair job on drooping roof liner (rivets, staples, chicken wire….)
21 Duct tape and wire hangers are holding on important parts like muffler, fenders, and hood
22 Starting up the vehicle on cold mornings sounds like waking up a grumpy giant
23 You have sliced open your thigh on jagged seat vinyl
24 Opening/closing a window involves forcing the glass up or down with your hands
25 You've ducked from gunshots... only to find out it was your car backfiring
26 Car in the driveway and you ride the bus to work
27 Other people don't park close to you
28 You find yourself standing in a junkyard looking for parts
29 While standing in a junkyard you spot a vehicle you once owned!
30 Strong arms from broken power steering
31 Oil stains mark your parking spot
32 Front window only defrosts on passenger side (actually I think that's standard on ALL vehicles)
33 Mirror cannot be adjusted as it has been repaired with super glue and bubble gum
34 You carry extra oil
35 You know how to add extra oil
36 You've experienced a roll-over birthday is (when your car has reached 100,000 miles for the 3rd or 4th time)
37 A screwdriver serves as your gear shift
38 You're convinced the previous owner didn't understand the concept of ashtrays
39 Bullet holes
40 Bullet still lodged in car
41 Before the petrified hamburger and fries science project made news you knew the results based on food left on your backseat.
42 You're fairly certain your car sat submerged in a body of water for more than a few days.
43 Seats don't adjust
44 You have to turn off the A/C to have enough power to go up a hill
45 Experience five flat tires (yes even the spare) in the same trip only to return home with tires that are worth more than the car
46 Bumper sticker concealing a crack in the bumper
47 Inaccessible glove compartment (and speculations about a hidden gun)
48 Detachable mirrors
49 Cracked windshield
50 Missing side or rear windows
51 Using a trashbag as a replacement for broken window
52 Hitchhikers run when they see you coming
53 You can see the road pass underneath as you drive due to a giant hole in the floor of the car
54 You've hung out of the driver's side window while driving down the highway with a squeegee because your windshield wipers no longer work
55 The words Gremlin or Pacer anywhere on your vehicle
56 There is a hole in the dashboard where a radio used to be but have filled it with a battery operated clock radio
57 Every time you hit a bump in the road, the station changes
58 People can see your exhaust fumes coming from a mile away.
59 Hood screwed on requiring screwdriver to check/change any fluids
60 Car fire!
61 No registration because that's admitting you actually own it.
62 No insurance because no one would cover it.
63 Children are too embarrassed to ride in it.
Post your point total in the comment section.

Friday Fragments - Dec 9, 2011
When the pudding cup is filled with liquid that sloshes back and forth, it's just a guess that maybe you shouldn't eat it. ~count this as a friendly, helpful tip~ So I didn't open the buldging top and just tossed it right into the trash.
I really hate the news stations. I watch both local and national news. They always glom onto a set of few topics and drive them into the ground. St. Louis news is all atwitter over Albert Pujohls accepting LA's bigass contract (baseball, in case you don't know/care). They are so worked up they can barely squeeze in the weather report. It's going to be huge news here for a while.
I just watched my recorded sunday morning shows and saw a quick, barely 3 second report about a WWII mine found in the Rhine River. THAT is interesting. Who cares if it isn't something unfolding on our soil? Give me more information. I think they said something about evacuating the town so they can detonate it. This is huge. And yet I'm getting play by play of anything Kardashian - WHO THE HELL CARES? And for those who do care, there are plenty of ways to fulfill the last three minutes of their lives. Ugh.
My Nashville trip has been postponed yet again. Bummer. But that's okay, I have plenty of other things to fill my time. I'm a little frustrated because no one really took the lead in getting this trip put together so I was patting myself on the back for coordinating everything instead of waiting until the last minute as would have happened if the other participants had stepped up. So instead, nearly in the last hour, it was decided for reasons beyond our preparation to hold off. Maddening.

I saw Santa Claus walking out of Burger King last night. Red suit and all. He lingered around a pickup truck and then crossed the lot. I bet he was waiting for his ride to swoop down from the roof of Bed Bath and Beyond. Just guessing.

Words With Friends. OMG. 1) I wondered how I hadn't sought out this incredibly popular game 2) oh yeah, my easily-addicted-to-games personality. Oh holy shit, I'm having fun. I might have to download it on one of my other facebook accounts... er, my husband's account. Did I mention how easily I get addicted to games? Yeah, this girl? Totally mastered Zelda. Twice. Zelda One AND Zelda Two... twice.
Oh, yeah, I assume you know what I'm talking about, but maybe you've been hiding like I was. Scrabble. AWESOME! It's not a timed game so you can play a word and then go brush your teeth, work 8 hours, fix dinner, eat it and then hope your opponent played their word so you get your turn. I was playing it on my iPhone but it was draining the battery something fierce. My brilliant son suggested I find if there's an app for our iPad. TA DA! AND it's easier for my squinty eyes to read.
PS. If I gave birth to you and you happen to be reading this, PLAY WITH ME. I know you own an iPad, be nice to your old mom, let me kick your arse with triple point words containing V.

There you go, a truly fragmented post (sorry I wasn't very fragmenty for the past several Fridays). Check out all of the other fragmenters...

Saturday Survey - Card Games
When was the last time you played cards? Do you have a game you prefer playing?
My husband came from a family that played a lot of cards. I mean A LOT. Nothing but a bunch of card sharks! Their most frequent game is 500, a form of rummy. We play it quite a bit and over time I've improved enough to win more than a few hands.
Most importantly it was quick to learn - deal 7 to each player and one for the discard pile. At the start of your turn you can pull 1 card from the pull pile, or as much as you need from the discards. If you need the fifth card down you have to take all of the cards on top of it, but you absolutely have to play the bottom card of what you pull (ideally more if possible) and keep the rest for your hand (except one discard).
A play is if you have 3 of a kind or a run of 3 (or more) in the same suit - lay those down during your turn, don't wait until the end. You can also play off sets from other players. No restrictions on how many you lay down and it can be without having any of your own cards out on the table, but you keep your played cards in front of you so you can count your points at the end.
Aces can be played high or low (AKQ, or A23) but it cannot be both (KA2)
Make sure you have a discard. Be careful because if you discard something that can be played, someone can call rummy and steal that card for their own use - don't throw away points!
The goal is to be the first to empty your hand WITH a discard. If you have an empty hand without a discard, play continues around the table. If your next draw is another playable card, play continues.
Points: Ace = 15 (no matter how it's played)
10, J, Q, K = 10
2-9 = 5
Add them up an the first person to reach 500 wins.

iPhone App
Tech corner chat today...
A coworker brought her ipod to lunch yesterday and got all of us helping her answer the word relation questions in this incredibly addictive game. As soon as I got back to my desk it was downloaded and ready to start.
OMG
I managed to suck in the family last night to finish the first level. Addictive indeed.
iAssociate 2 (click here)
As I told my messageboard friends, when you come up for air and stop pondering 12 letter words associated with spaghetti you can hunt me down for a little retribution.
Have fun!

Saturday Survey - Game Night
What do you think about board games and cards? Which are your favorites?
At home we play cards, a game called 500 that is a version of rummy. The Husband is a pro and usually wins. When we're with friends we've played a variety of games, but the one we keep coming back to is Mexican Train, a variation of dominoes.

Diversion
Yesterday I spent the afternoon doing what many tech people detest - sitting on the phone waiting for tech support to pick up. Hold music hell.
Had I been smart I would have used my cell phone and flitted around the office doing other stuff, but no, I was stranded by a desk phone staring at a computer screen waiting for the magic code from the Serial Number Gods.
What's an easily distracted multi-tasker to do?
I whipped out my iPhone (the one I should have made the call on instead) and played Angry Birds. I had heard this stupid app is addictive. Oh.My. I sort of look forward to sitting on hold today.
Angry Birds is FUN! I might have to break down and pay for the full version.
