Treated my son to milk shakes after yard work this morning. We went someplace special that I'll highlight in tomorrow's post. Hubby got strawberry, I got chocolate and Ian got vanilla. Another local place, Steak N Shake, offers side by side flavors and my fav there is banana and chocolate.
By the way (and this totally is not a paid endorsement) Jack In The Box has some pretty kickass shakes. Many people have never tried their shakes, so if you have a store near you, check it out. Totally worth the trip.

Friday Fragments - April 29, 2011
Good Morning!
I've been up for five hours now - got up early to watch the royal wedding. It was gorgeous and every bit as spectacular as I had hoped. So sad Diana never got to see her lovely boys grow up and get married. It's impossible to look at William and not see his mother, he has her eyes.
It's been quite the week. Last Friday closed out with horrendous storms ripping through northern St. Louis County. Everybody I know has a story of where they were when the tornadoes barreled into town and knows someone affected. We are all grateful and amazed no one died. Then yesterday my friends through the south are reporting even greater damage and loss of life. I don't know who did it, but Mother Nature is PISSED OFF and we had better start making amends quickly - hurricane season is just around the corner.
In geeky news, I will be reformatting a server in the not so far future. That always sounds much more harrowing than it really is. The key is to have decent backups of all of the data.
While I'm on the subject of backups, have you backed up your computer lately? How about your blog? It's been a little too long since I've done any of that myself. But seriously, save your work frequently and have a reliable back up.
Okay, back to work for this chick. I'm trying really hard to get back into the swing of visiting everyone now that I'm past the auction slog.

Royal Watch
Is anybody going to voluntarily watch the wedding tomorrow morning? Most everyone I know thinks it's all gibberish, but personally I love it. Of course I love weddings and I enjoy seeing the royal family so it's all quite groovy in my book.
My plan is to get up early, curl up on the couch and be able to claim I watched it live. Pretty much the same as I did when Charles and Diana got married. I might even call my mom in the wee hours so we can share a little commentary with each other (think I came by this interest because of her?)
I'm not dressing up nor am I fixing anything special or British. Nope, just snuggled up on my couch with the remote in my jammies with my eyes barely open.
So, are you in the group who doesn't give a hoot or will you be following the hoopla?

Pondering Lunch
I swear I think about lunch all morning long. I know the instant I leave the house whether or not I need to make plans - basically did I bring my lunch or not? And if I need to make plans, oh my, the choices available. They are narrowed down by my willingness to eat at a restaurant or ordering in. If we order in, will the place take checks? I rarely carry cash.
Today Qdoba might be getting my business. A place to sit down away from work seems to be in order.
Worse yet, I'm such a creature of habit that once I find a food I like, that is all I ever order. Qdoba means a chicken quesadilla, Bread Co (Panera) is an Asian chicken salad, Fazolli's is the chicken caesar salad.... geez I eat a lot of chicken!
Can you tell it's lunch time?

I Thought I Would Cry
Patty Higgins, a woman I knew as "Pateeta", passed away on Easter. She has been fighting ovarian cancer for a long time and since Christmas has been in and out of the hospital. She knew she was terminal but chose to live on her terms. Several weeks ago she held a living wake, giving her the chance to tell us good-bye personally. I was unable to attend the wake, but tipped a glass of wine in her honor as did several of her online friends. Since then she declined slowly, painfully, but still on her own terms.
There is no way to properly eulogize Patty. She was bold and funny and super friendly. I had the tremendous honor of meeting her in person several years ago. She greeted me as if we had been long time friends and quickly loaded me up with quirky gifts. I will never forget her easy generosity. For the last several months she posted a perky morning greeting on Facebook, usually welcoming the sunshine. Can we ever look at another sunrise and not think of her? Most simply, Patty reminds us to welcome each day with gratitude.
Her death was imminent and I thought of her daily, hoping she wasn't in pain. When I lost my friend David a few weeks ago I was sure Patty would die that same weekend, making me a slobbering mess losing two friends so close together. But Patty persisted, she had more farewells to say, more time to spend with her children.
When her time came, it was right. I thought I would cry, but I didn't. I have found happiness for her, for leaving on her terms, for living on her terms, for fighting in what she believed in. She is a strong woman and she reminded us to live and to live strong, loud, to be present.
I am a marked woman. I have had the honor of meeting, knowing, and being influenced by the most amazing person. If you have not had the honor, please read her blog. It's blunt and honest and beautiful to the end.

Rain Rain Go Away
It's hard to talk about anything but weather related crap but it sure makes itself front an center these days. The past week has seen very little sunshine and the next several days are predicted to be much more of the same. Friday was the third round of tornadoes hitting the area this month, but there are people still piecing their lives together from storms that blew through on New Year's Eve. What is they say, what you were doing on New Years Eve is what you will do all year long? Gotta say St. Louis has been riddled with wave after wave of storms - snow, rain, thunder, tornado. Floods are the next threat. It's definitely crazy.

Sunday In My City - April 24, 2011
Happy Easter!
Many many people in St. Louis are gathering in churches today offering their gratitude for coming through a horrible storm. Possessions were lost, but not a single life. The destruction is simply amazing. A few hours ago I drove through Ferguson Missouri where I lived not so many years ago. I didn't realize it but my first house was directly in the path of this tornado. It looks undamaged but the neighborhood is littered with broken trees and all sorts of debris.
These were taken driving along Highway 70
You can barely see it but just above that car is a fence with trash tied into the weave this is where the tornado crossed the highway
Warehouse with the wall blown out. That is product still sitting on the shelves.

It really is a beautiful day. The rain is beautiful watering our flowers, my beautiful children are safe and happy and I am happy. There is nothing else I could want. Happy Easter.

Tornado Hits Airport
Sorry I'm skipping my regular Saturday Survey, but there was a big ass storm that struck the St. Louis area. It has closed the airport and the path of destruction crosses over some very familiar territory where I lived just a few years ago.... where my children still reside. Each child has checked in and is okay as is my mom and grandma.
I'm learning this morning how very close to my son's ice cream shop this storm ripped by. It's my understanding that they are only suffering power outage, but the roads are closed so he can't get to the shop to inspect closer. He will be talking to the insurance company about the lost product, hopefully that will be covered.
The pictures are incredible. As the news helicopter scans cameras over the area I'm pointing out friend's houses and other points of interest. So far it's just structural damage, no reports of any injuries fortunately.

Friday Fragments - April 22, 2011
Good morning! Happy Friday!
Currently, I'm listening to a thunderstorm rumble through town. I'm one of those silly people who actually enjoys a big, loud storm... up until it knocks out the power.
My deepest apologies for skipping a week worth of posting, including last week's Friday Fragments. I was in full-on auction mode. There has to be a way to make it less crazy because it follows the same exact pattern every year, I just don't know what the answer is.
The auction was last Sunday and it was a huge hit. It sounds like maybe it was the biggest yet, so it's worth all of the headache.
On top of it all I was horribly sick with some lung thing that was floating around the office, including two people have come down with pneumonia. The Husband and I were both sick for over a week. I took off work on Wednesday to compensate for the nine hours I worked on Sunday. I slept the entire freaking day. Clearly I was worn out, but I had absolutely no clue.
Are your kids off school today? I don't remember getting Good Friday or "Easter Monday" off school, but it seems that every school district in the area is offering four day weekends for Easter. Ian is spending the weekend with his dad so I will be doing Easter next weekend wrapped with his birthday. That's not cheating is it?

A Day Of Rest
Yesterday morning I took The Husband to have an infected hair follicle removed. I fell asleep in the waiting room, then when I drove him home I fell asleep on the couch only to wake up long enough to run to Subway for lunch and then sleep away the rest of the afternoon.
What the hell? Was it the culmination of stress from the last several weeks? Or is my body still fighting this stupid cold? Or all of it all balled up together? Whatever it was I knew not to fight it.

Mr. Yucko Services Needed
I just spent the last hour raking my backyard. It's a small yard, but even a big yard with three large dogs would be obvious that the toilet was overflowing. YUCK! All I can say is that grass had better be lush and beautiful this summer. And my brother needs to hurry up and find a place to live because I really do not want to do another load like that again.

Saturday Survey - Auctions
It feels like FOREVER since I posted... oh, wait, it has been!
Hell week comes to an end tomorrow night. Of course there will be Monday Madness to tally the money raised and Tuesday is our staff meeting - no rest for the weary or something like that. On top of it all I'm sick as a dog! I'm suffering old man sneezes - ones where you fart with each sneeze. What the hell is up with that? Oh, sorry, TMI.
So tomorrow is the annual dinner auction raising a cool $100,000 for the foundation where I work. It's our biggest fundraiser so it's a pretty big deal and the reason that the last two weeks have been devoted to nothing but auction.
My question today is when was the last time you attended an auction?
I won't count the work auctions since I'm working not bidding (although I do have my eye on a particular item in the silent auction). That means the last auction I attended was back in the early 90's! It was a Saturday in a very small town in northern Missouri - a country auction. My friend Booty came out with an antique luggage stand and I landed a box of fabric and quilt squares.
It was hard to contain myself as I got caught up in the bidding frenzy so I have avoided auctions since then. I realize there are rules as for setting a dollar amount and not going over that which is all fine and dandy for the strong, I am no such person.

Saturday Survey - Garden Planning
Who here gardens? When I bought my first house I found I really enjoyed maintaining a flower garden. Each year that little patch under the front window got bigger, finally extending the width of the house, around the corner and into the yard around the lilac bush.
I am kind of itching to get another flower garden going at my current house, but there are lots of problems here. A couple of years ago we tried tomatoes in large planters but we started too late so this year we're going to start much earlier. Tomorrow we'll get our seedlings and hopefully they will thrive in my sunroom until I can take them outside - about three more weeks. It's hard to believe with a day like today in the 90's that we could still have a hard freeze yet that's happened plenty of times.
I will also put marigold seeds and a few other flowers in the pots with the tomatoes. I just can't go without some pretty blooms!
So what are your garden plans this year?

It's a very fragmented day, indeed. This and next week are crazy busy at work with lots of evening hours put in. To complicate matters my mind really isn't in it.
Long time friend David passed away last weekend. His memorial service is tomorrow.
Also tugging at my heart is my messageboard friend who has been in and out of hospice for the past several months is in horrible pain and is ready to go.

A coworker brought her ipod to lunch yesterday and got all of us helping her answer the word relation questions in this incredibly addictive game. As soon as I got back to my desk it was downloaded and ready to start.

Tornado Alley
We landed free tickets to see Tornado Alley at the Omnimax theater. I took off work early on Friday ready to sit in the 3D experience of a tornado.
Um yeah.
If you've been following the TIV in Storm Chasers on the Discovery Channel you don't need to bother. This was 45 minutes of cameramen running across parking lots, long lasting shots of sunsets, open fields and about three 2 second tornadoes all with the voice over of an explanation of their mission, the building of the TIV and the science of a tornado. There was much more drama and storm action on the TV show.
In other words, it was really disappointing.
Um yeah.

Wind
I don't know where you live, but I imagine that wind of some sort is a daily part of your life. I came from the west coast where winds billowed down mountains and through valleys with such regularity we were used to scattered and tangled hair and constantly shielding our eyes from the dust. A nice day was defined by gentle breezes.
Then we moved to St. Louis. I was so obsessed with the lack of mountains on the horizon that I never realized the missing air currents.
The air here does not move.
St. Louis is a prehistoric swamp - mosquitoes, termites and stagnant air continue to this day. Wind turbines are a rare site because there just isn't enough wind to sustain them. There is ONE turbine in the area and usually it sits still.
So a day like yesterday with 40 mile per hour wind is rare. Wind in St. Louis may be a nice break and certainly worthy to open the windows and chase loose papers around the house, but it's also an omen of bad weather.
Wind here is never good.
Fortunately we weren't wakened by tornado sirens at midnight but major thunderstorms have been rumbling through the area since the wee hours this morning. Today is payment for yesterday's record high temps (90°), clear skies, sunshine, and rustling winds. Cold rain is on our plate for the day.
Every time we have a windy day I feel like an old farmer and want to say "a storm is a brewin'."

A Friend Passed Away
David passed away this morning as his family made the difficult decision to remove him from life support. On Friday he was found at the bottom of his stairs. They're unsure if he had an anneurism before or after he fell.
He leaves behind three beautiful daughters, several grandchildren, and many many friends who will all miss him dearly.
David was one of the best guys you could ever know. He was kind and soft spoken, but always ready to gather with friends and have a good laugh. I cannot recall him ever saying a hurtful word.
Clearly, only the good die young.
Dave, I wish we kept in touch these past few years. Everyone has been asking about you. We miss you so much and kick ourselves for not getting the chance to see you one more time. Your girls are so lucky to have you as their guardian angel to shield them as only a father could. Please pass our way in your heavenly travels and stop in for a drink.

Friday Fragments - April 1, 2011
Happy April Fools Day!
If you're following me on Facebook you'll see this morning (April Fools Day) that I posted I'm due in November. So far I've only gotten one thumbs up. What will be funny is to see my family flip out over it even though they know my baby factory is CLOSED.
For those who have been reading my blog for a while you know that I have an ongoing prank war with a coworker. So when a TOILET appeared in my front yard on Tuesday I immediately blamed Anna. Sure enough, she was guilty.
Sooooooooooooooo... yesterday (she's not going to be at work today to enjoy the retribution) I set up a free email account, created a Craigslist single's ad and then configured it to come up in her email reader on her computer. She called me in a panic about all of these weird messages coming in. I put on my IT hat and got all serious investigating this problem. I opened one of the messages, clicked the link to the posting and as she read it she burst out laughing. She conceded I got her back.
Now I have to sit and wait for her response.
My other fragment for the day is to share that I spent Saturday with my future daughter-in-law viewing her wedding dress. Her sisters and my daughter were also there giving their thumbs up before she put her money down. It's a gorgeous dress and looks beautiful on her. The wedding is next April and excitement is building. Now I need to start looking for a mother's dress. I will probably go for lavender, but I have no idea what style and non-shopper me is going to have to start combing the racks. Woooo

For those who have been reading my blog for a while you know that I have an ongoing prank war with a coworker. So when a TOILET appeared in my front yard on Tuesday I immediately blamed Anna. Sure enough, she was guilty.
Sooooooooooooooo... yesterday (she's not going to be at work today to enjoy the retribution) I set up a free email account, created a Craigslist single's ad and then configured it to come up in her email reader on her computer. She called me in a panic about all of these weird messages coming in. I put on my IT hat and got all serious investigating this problem. I opened one of the messages, clicked the link to the posting and as she read it she burst out laughing. She conceded I got her back.
Now I have to sit and wait for her response.
My other fragment for the day is to share that I spent Saturday with my future daughter-in-law viewing her wedding dress. Her sisters and my daughter were also there giving their thumbs up before she put her money down. It's a gorgeous dress and looks beautiful on her. The wedding is next April and excitement is building. Now I need to start looking for a mother's dress. I will probably go for lavender, but I have no idea what style and non-shopper me is going to have to start combing the racks. Woooo
